Safe Harbor
NEREN has collaborated with affiliates in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island to develop a service that will help ensure that its members will be able to provide real-time, up-to-the-minute information via their "Safe Harbor" web sites in case of a disaster or other emergency.
The organization has worked to establish standby web servers located on the NEREN footprint in Springfield, MA that has allowed colleges and other institutions and agencies to maintain remote web sites that will be accessible should a statewide emergency affect services in the North East. The servers will offer news, for instance, that all students are safe and accounted for, or allow member hospitals to give patients and families the knowledge they need to stay safe and access services.
The power of high speed independent Internet network connectivity could be utilized to communicate with people outside an affected area, should disaster damage the local communications infrastructure.
Safe Harbor enables NEREN members to ensure that vital information will continue to be available on a timely basis.
NEREN also coordinates with similar efforts that are underway in New York through its member NYSERNet. Such extended cooperation grants NEREN access to a wide range of data allowing for further exploration into recovery options and applications.
The Safe Harbor site was completed in January, 2007.
